HIV disease and the treatments used to fight it places great demands on a patient’s body. Some HIV medications must be taken with food, while others must be taken on an empty stomach. Good nutrition allows the body to tolerate HIV medications better and to fight the HIV infection more effectively. This program uses licensed dieticians to offer nutrition education and/or counseling provided outside of a primary care visit. Referrals for this service generally are made by the client’s primary care physician or through the HIV Wellness Clinics. Emphasis is placed on addressing the special dietary needs of persons living with HIV disease.
