| 12/01/2008 | World AIDS Day | World AIDS Day to be observed in Laurel on Monday, December 1st with a Program of Hope and Candlelight Walk of Remembrance The Sussex County AIDS Council (SCAC) will hold its fifth annual World AIDS Day observance at the Downtown Laurel Park at 6 pm on Monday, December 1st. The pubic is invited and encouraged to attend. Each year on World AIDS Day, hundreds of people in Sussex County, and hundreds of thousands of people around the world, join together to remember those lost to AIDS and to renew the publics promise of support for those living with and at-risk for HIV/AIDS. SCACs World AIDS Day observance will begin with a brief program at the Downtown Laurel Park. This will feature special comments, music and The Reading of the Names, which is one of the most moving parts of the evenings program. The names of people lost to AIDS, submitted to SCAC over the past several years, are read aloud. Names may be submitted for this reading by calling the SCAC office at (302) 644-1090 or e-mail to info@scacinc.org. Following the program, a Candlelight Walk of Remembrance will move along Delaware Avenue to the Janosik Park where walkers may pause to toss flowers into Broad Creek in memory of those lost to AIDS. Heatherly Florists in Laurel has generously donated flowers for this special remembrance. The walk will conclude back at the Downtown Laurel Park. Walkers are invited to the nearby Laurel State Service Center afterward for refreshments, fellowship, and information about the impact of HIV/AIDS on Sussex Countians, Delawareans, and people across the nation and around the world. It has been more than 25 years since the first case of AIDS was diagnosed and HIV was identified. Today, the issue of HIV/AIDS seems to be less and less on the minds of Americans and Delawareans. However, the number of HIV/AIDS cases continues to increase. In Delaware, about 3,500 people have been diagnosed with AIDS and nearly 1,500 have died from the disease since the first cases were reported in 1986. Since tracking began in 2003, more than 1,100 people in Delaware have tested positive for HIV. Each year on this day we pause to remember and celebrate the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS, said Wade Jones, HIV/AIDS Prevention Program Manager with SCAC. World AIDS Day reminds us all that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done to educate about HIV, reduce the rate of HIV infection, and provide needed support for those in Sussex County living with HIV/AIDS. The Delaware Division of Public Health, Kent Sussex Counseling Services, and LaRed Medical Center are participating with SCAC in this years World AIDS Day observance in Laurel. SCAC provides supportive services including emergency financial assistance for housing, transportation to medical appointments, and emergency/supplemental food to more than 200 people in Sussex County living with HIV/AIDS. SCAC also educates the public about HIV infection and its prevention, and advocates for clients experiencing hardship. |
